Portrait of a Gentleman from the Casa de Leiva by El Greco

Portrait of a Gentleman from the Casa de Leiva

El Greco·1580

Historical Context

El Greco's Portrait of a Gentleman from the Casa de Leiva of around 1580 depicts a member of the notable Castilian noble family with the formal restraint of Spanish court portraiture combined with El Greco's Venetian sensitivity to individual character. The sitter's dark doublet and ruff, the military bearing, and the controlled expression create a study in Castilian aristocratic self-presentation. El Greco's portraits of Spanish nobles and scholars are among the most psychologically acute of the late sixteenth century, his foreigner's eye seeing his sitters with unusual clarity.

Technical Analysis

El Greco renders the nobleman with the influence of Venetian portraiture and the emerging austerity of his Spanish manner, using a dark palette and focused attention on the expressive hand and face.
