St Veronica Holding the Veil
El Greco·1600
Historical Context
El Greco's Saint Veronica Holding the Veil of around 1600 depicts the woman of Jerusalem who reportedly wiped Christ's face on the Via Dolorosa, receiving the miraculous impression of his features on the cloth. El Greco treated the Veronica subject repeatedly, each version exploring different aspects of the holy image's theological and aesthetic implications. Veronica is the female saint most closely associated with Christian sacred image-making — her name combining 'vera' and 'icon' to mean 'true image' — and El Greco's personal investment in the theology of images gives these works particular depth.
Technical Analysis
El Greco renders the veil and its sacred image with characteristic luminosity, using the contrast between the cloth's white surface and the dark background to create a powerful image of sacred presence.
