Portrait of Luís Gonzaga by El Greco

Portrait of Luís Gonzaga

El Greco·1583

Historical Context

El Greco's Portrait of Luís Gonzaga of around 1583 depicts the young Italian Jesuit who was canonized in 1726 as patron saint of youth, painted shortly before Gonzaga's death at twenty-three from plague contracted while nursing the sick in Rome. El Greco's portrait of the ascetic young nobleman who had renounced a noble inheritance for religious life captures the intense spiritual conviction that made Gonzaga a model of Counter-Reformation piety. The portrait connects El Greco to the wider network of Spanish and Italian Jesuit spirituality that pervaded his Toledo circle.

Technical Analysis

El Greco renders the nobleman with his developing Spanish style, using a dark palette and focused lighting to create a portrait of aristocratic dignity with emerging spiritual intensity.
