Saint Francis in Ecstasy
Historical Context
Painted around 1660 during Zurbarán's late career in Madrid, this work depicts Saint Francis in mystical rapture, a subject the artist revisited throughout his life. Zurbarán painted more images of Saint Francis than any other Spanish artist, reflecting the deep Franciscan devotion prevalent in Counter-Reformation Spain. By this period his style had softened under the influence of Murillo, moving away from the stark tenebrism of his earlier Sevillian works.
Technical Analysis
The composition isolates the saint against a dark background, employing Zurbarán's characteristic treatment of monastic robes with sculptural folds. The palette is restrained, with subtle tonal gradations creating an atmosphere of contemplative stillness.
