October (Saison d'octobre), painted in 1878 and now in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, is one of Bastien-Lepage's most important transitional works, bridging his earlier academic training and the mature naturalism of Hay Making and Joan of Arc. The painting depicts a young peasant woman in an autumnal rural setting, combining plein-air observation of the landscape with careful figure study. By 1878 Bastien-Lepage had fully developed his signature approach: figures painted outdoors from direct observation against backgrounds of equal naturalist precision. The National Gallery of Victoria's acquisition — one of a pair of important Bastien-Lepage works in Melbourne alongside The Annunciation to the Shepherds — reflects the extraordinary enthusiasm for French naturalist painting among Australian collectors and institutions in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The autumnal subject allowed Bastien-Lepage to deploy his characteristic grey-green-ochre palette in its most typical seasonal register, the harvest season that was also the subject of Hay Making.
