Boulevard Montmartre, Spring
Camille Pissarro·1897
Historical Context
This 1897 canvas, showing the Boulevard Montmartre in spring, is one of the most celebrated works in his boulevard series — the first systematic urban series that established his reputation as a painter of modern Paris. Working from his room at the Hôtel de Russie, he captured the same stretch of the grand boulevard across every season and weather condition. Spring brought new foliage to the boulevard trees, transforming the visual character of the street. The spring version, with its fresh green canopy and lighter crowds, represents perhaps the most optimistic of the seasonal variations, conveying the renewal of Parisian life after winter.
Technical Analysis
Spring light and fresh foliage create a warm, luminous palette of pale green, gold, and cream. Pissarro's boulevard brushwork is particularly lively in spring works, with small, active marks conveying the movement of crowds and the vibration of new leaves. The long receding perspective of the boulevard is balanced by the tree canopy above.
