Girl with an Oil Lamp at a Window
Gerrit Dou·1660
Historical Context
Girl with an Oil Lamp at a Window from around 1660 is a nocturnal genre scene exploiting the artificial light effects that Dou had made a specialty. Candlelit and lamp-lit interiors — figures illuminated by a single flame against surrounding darkness — were a challenging technical exercise that displayed the fijnschilder's command of tonal gradation. Dou's artificial-light scenes were among his most admired and most collected works, commanding high prices from Dutch and European collectors.
Technical Analysis
The girl holds the lamp, which illuminates her face from below in a characteristically dramatic artificial-light effect. Dou renders the difference between the warm flame-light on the face and the cool shadows of the night beyond with extreme precision. The stone ledge and dark background are standard elements of his niche format.
