Christ Taking Leave of his Mother by Cornelis Engebrechtsz.

Christ Taking Leave of his Mother

Cornelis Engebrechtsz.·1517

Historical Context

Cornelis Engebrechtsz. painted this Christ Taking Leave of His Mother around 1517 for the Rijksmuseum. This distinctly Northern European devotional subject emphasized the human emotions of Christ and Mary before the Passion, appealing to the empathetic devotional culture of the late-medieval Netherlands. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.

Technical Analysis

The panel presents the emotional farewell with Engebrechtsz.'s characteristic expressiveness, using angular figures and vivid color to convey the grief of the impending separation.
