Niccolo Rondinelli·1500
Historical Context
Peace Bringing Back Abundance, an allegorical painting from around 1780, shows Vigée Le Brun working in the tradition of history painting with allegorical figures — a genre that commanded higher prestige than portraiture in academic hierarchy. Peace, crowned and serene, embraces Abundance as the two figures move through a luminous landscape. The neoclassical draperies, soft modeling, and warm palette demonstrate her command of the grand manner. The painting was significant for her reception by the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1783 — membership that opened institutional doors closed to most women artists of her era. Her reception as a full academician, unprecedented for a woman portraitist, was itself a political act in the cultural politics of pre-Revolutionary France.
Technical Analysis
