The Cannon Shot
Historical Context
Willem van de Velde the Younger's Cannon Shot from around 1680, in the Rijksmuseum, is one of the most dramatic marine paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, depicting a warship firing a salute. The van de Velde family—father and son—were the supreme marine painters of the seventeenth century, and both eventually entered English service under Charles II. The painting's precise rendering of naval architecture combined with atmospheric sea and sky effects represents the pinnacle of Dutch marine painting.
Technical Analysis
The composition captures the explosive moment of the cannon discharge, with smoke billowing across the calm sea surface. Van de Velde's technique combines meticulous attention to the ship's rigging and hull with atmospheric rendering of water, clouds, and gunpowder smoke.
