Banks of the Seine
Alfred Sisley·1878
Historical Context
Held at the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, this 1878 canvas shows the banks of the Seine — part of Sisley's sustained documentation of the Seine valley in the years when he was moving between various riverside villages. By 1878 he had experienced serious financial difficulties following the death of his father, leaving him without the private income that had previously subsidized his painting. Despite this hardship, his work of the late 1870s maintained high quality, and his Seine river views of this period show a painter working with dedication under difficult personal circumstances.
Technical Analysis
The Seine bank composition employs Sisley's characteristic horizontal structure, with the river providing a reflective band. His 1878 technique is fully mature — fluid, atmospheric, with sensitive response to the specific quality of light on water and bank. The palette is warm in sunlit passages, cool in shadow and atmospheric distance.
