The Children of Gabriel Thomas
Berthe Morisot·1894
Historical Context
Painted in 1894 and depicting the children of Morisot's friend and patron Gabriel Thomas, this canvas belongs to her final year's production. Children as subjects had been central to Morisot's practice from the 1870s onward, but her late treatment of childhood became increasingly fluid and atmospheric. Thomas was an important patron and friend of the Impressionist circle, and the commission of this portrait reflects Morisot's secure position within Parisian cultural life. The Musée de l'Évêché de Limoges holds this late, freely handled work.
Technical Analysis
Morisot's late brushwork is at its most liberated here, the children's figures built from rapid, swirling strokes of pink, white, and warm shadow tones. The background dissolves into soft greens and blues, providing tonal context without spatial definition. Form is suggested rather than described.
