San Cassiano Altarpiece by Antonello da Messina

San Cassiano Altarpiece

Antonello da Messina·1475

Historical Context

Antonello da Messina's San Cassiano Altarpiece, painted around 1475-1476 and now surviving only in fragments in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, was the artist's most important Venetian commission. The monumental sacra conversazione was created during Antonello's transformative visit to Venice and profoundly influenced Giovanni Bellini's subsequent altar compositions. Though much of the original painting is lost, the surviving fragments reveal the revolutionary integration of Netherlandish luminosity with Italian monumental composition.

Technical Analysis

The surviving fragments demonstrate Antonello's remarkable synthesis of Netherlandish oil precision with Venetian spatial grandeur, the luminous glazing technique that transformed Bellini's approach to altar painting evident even in the fragmentary remains.
