Madonna and Child, Four Saints and Four Angels
Historical Context
Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, one of the most active Florentine painters of the late Trecento, created this Madonna and Child with Four Saints and Four Angels now in the Hermitage Museum. Niccolò ran a large and productive workshop that supplied altarpieces to churches and confraternities across Tuscany, working in a conservative style rooted in the Giottesque tradition. The presence of this work in St. Petersburg reflects the extensive acquisition of Italian primitives by Russian imperial collectors in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera on gold-ground panel, the composition follows the established Florentine sacra conversazione format with symmetrically arranged saints flanking the central Madonna group. Niccolò's clear, well-organized compositions and solid figure drawing reflect his workshop's reliable craftsmanship.
