Adoration of the Magi with Camels
El Greco·1568
Historical Context
Adoration of the Magi with Camels (c. 1568–70) in the Museo Soumaya is an early Italian work showing the Epiphany with the exotic detail that the presence of Eastern visitors to Bethlehem invited. The camels in the background — unusual in Italian treatments of the subject but common in northern European depictions — suggest El Greco was drawing on a range of visual sources beyond Italian painting. The work shows his early ambition to master the multi-figure narrative compositions that were the test of a great history painter in the Italian tradition, while his Cretan training is still visible in the hieratic treatment of the central figures.
Technical Analysis
The rich, warm Venetian palette and the elaborate procession demonstrate El Greco's absorption of the Venetian narrative tradition, with dynamic figure arrangement showing Tintoretto's influence.
