Saint Barbara Reading
Robert Campin·1438
Historical Context
Robert Campin's Saint Barbara Reading, painted around 1438 for the Prado, depicts the virgin martyr absorbed in a book beside a fireplace in a contemporary Flemish interior. The remarkable domestic setting, complete with a view through a window and carefully observed furnishings, exemplifies the Netherlandish transformation of sacred imagery. Robert Campin, now generally identified with the so-called Master of Flémalle, was one of the founders of the Flemish painting tradition alongside Jan van Eyck.
Technical Analysis
The panel is a masterpiece of descriptive realism, with the fireplace, bench, towel, and window rendered with meticulous precision. Campin's oil technique allows for subtle gradations of light across the room's interior surfaces.
