The Carrying of the Cross
Biagio d'Antonio·1500
Historical Context
Painted around 1500 and now in the Louvre, The Carrying of the Cross by Biagio d'Antonio depicts Christ bearing the cross toward Golgotha — the Via Dolorosa scene that held enormous weight in late medieval and Renaissance Passion devotion. By 1500 Biagio d'Antonio had built a career spanning private commissions and the Sistine Chapel frescoes. A large Carrying of the Cross would have served either an altarpiece context or a significant private chapel, guiding viewers through the sequential stations of the Passion. The Louvre's acquisition reflects the panel's quality and its place within the established tradition of Florentine narrative religious painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil or tempera on panel with Florentine workshop precision. The composition requires managing Christ's bent posture under the cross's weight as the narrative anchor against a procession of soldiers and mourners; the receding figures create movement toward the distant hill of execution.
