St. Veronica
Lorenzo Costa·1508
Historical Context
Lorenzo Costa painted this image of St. Veronica around 1508, during his tenure as court painter in Mantua following the death of Mantegna. The subject depicts the saint holding the veil bearing the miraculous imprint of Christ's face, a popular devotional image in Counter-Reformation piety. Costa's Bolognese training under Francesco Francia is evident in the soft modeling and contemplative mood. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Costa's characteristic sfumato-influenced modeling and warm Emilian palette. The figure is rendered with gentle chiaroscuro and a restrained, devotional composition.
