Madonna and Child by Girolamo Romanino

Madonna and Child

Girolamo Romanino·1507

Historical Context

Girolamo Romanino created this work around 1507 during the High Renaissance period. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories. The Italian Renaissance context brought a new emphasis on classical antiquity, mathematical perspective, and the idealization of the human figure that transformed European art.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel demonstrating the techniques characteristic of High Renaissance painting. The work shows competent handling of its subject matter within established artistic conventions.
