Historical Context
Bartolomeo Vivarini headed the Vivarini workshop in Murano, one of the most productive painting enterprises in the Venetian territories during the fifteenth century. This Nursing Madonna was created around 1500 and is now held at the Department of Paintings of the Louvre The Madonna and Child was the most ubiquitous devotional subject of medieval and Renaissance art, present in every church and many private homes as a focus for prayer and spiritual contemplation.
