The Cottage. From A Home (26 watercolours) by Carl Larsson

The Cottage. From A Home (26 watercolours)

Carl Larsson·1899

Historical Context

The Cottage. From A Home is one of the 26 watercolors in the Ett hem series, showing the exterior of Lilla Hyttnäs at Sundborn. The cottage exterior was as much a work of design as the interiors: Carl and Karin Larsson transformed what had been a simple farmhouse into an expression of their aesthetic values, painting the exterior in deep red (the traditional Falun red of Dalarna vernacular architecture) and designing the garden, outbuildings, and approach in keeping with their philosophy of beautiful, meaningful domestic space. The exterior view in the Ett hem series served a different purpose from the interior scenes — it situated the family's life within a specific Swedish landscape and demonstrated that the Larsson aesthetic extended from inside to outside, from the curtain pattern to the garden gate. The publication of this series made the Sundborn cottage famous throughout Sweden and eventually influenced domestic design in Germany, Japan, and beyond.

Technical Analysis

Transparent watercolor suited to capturing the specific Falun red pigment of vernacular Dalarna architecture against Swedish natural light. The composition balances architectural precision with relaxed, naturalistic handling of garden and landscape elements surrounding the cottage.

Look Closer

  • ◆The Falun red paint of the cottage exterior was a deliberate reference to Dalarna vernacular architecture and Swedish rural tradition.
  • ◆Garden details reveal the careful design work Karin Larsson applied to the outdoor spaces as thoroughly as to the interiors.
  • ◆The Swedish summer light renders shadows crisp and colors clear, qualities the watercolor medium captures with particular fidelity.
  • ◆The composition includes the cottage within its broader landscape context, emphasizing the integration of designed space with natural setting.
