Crayfishing. From A Home (26 watercolours) by Carl Larsson

Crayfishing. From A Home (26 watercolours)

Carl Larsson·1899

Historical Context

Crayfishing. From A Home is one of the 26 watercolors that constitute the Ett hem series, published in 1899. The crayfish (kräfta) holds a specific place in Swedish social culture: the kräftskiva, or crayfish party, is a late-summer tradition of considerable ceremonial importance, and crayfishing was both a practical activity and a social ritual in Swedish rural communities. The Dalarna region around Sundborn had rich freshwater streams where the family and guests would have participated in this seasonal tradition. Larsson's inclusion of such activities in the Ett hem series reinforced his larger argument about the richness of domestic and rural Swedish life — that it contained its own forms of ceremony and pleasure that needed no comparison with urban sophistication. The watercolor medium handles the reflective quality of water and the cool early morning light typical of crayfishing expeditions with particular effectiveness.

Technical Analysis

Transparent watercolor with the light handling characteristic of the Ett hem series. Water surfaces are rendered through careful observation of reflected color and light, with the white paper serving as the highest light value. Figure and landscape are integrated through shared light conditions.

Look Closer

  • ◆The reflective surface of the water is suggested through carefully placed color passages rather than literal rendering.
  • ◆The early morning or late evening light quality associated with crayfishing gives the scene a particular atmospheric quality.
  • ◆Figures engaged in the activity are observed with the specificity of direct study rather than composed from imagination.
  • ◆The Sundborn landscape context — stream, bank, vegetation — is rendered with the affectionate topographical accuracy Larsson brought to all his property's features.
