The Dining Room. From A Home (26 watercolours) by Carl Larsson

The Dining Room. From A Home (26 watercolours)

Carl Larsson·c. 1886

Historical Context

The Dining Room is one of the twenty-six watercolours Carl Larsson made of Lilla Hyttnäs, published as Ett hem in 1899. The dining room was a central space in the Larsson household — large enough to seat the family of ten, decorated with Karin Larsson's painted furniture and embroidered textiles, and designed to embody the family's philosophy of functional beauty. Larsson had published a preliminary version of the Sundborn series as a gift book in 1894 (De mina), and the more comprehensive Ett hem expanded the project significantly. The dining room appears in several Larsson compositions across the years, including the celebrated Christmas Eve Dinner, functioning almost as a stage set for the family's collective life. The Nationalmuseum holds this image as part of Sweden's national cultural patrimony.

Technical Analysis

Watercolour on paper with the precise spatial organization and luminous transparency characteristic of the Ett hem series. The dining room's combination of table, chairs, windows, and decorative surface elements requires confident perspective construction and careful attention to the play of light across multiple surfaces. Karin's painted furniture and textiles are rendered with affectionate descriptive detail.

Look Closer

  • ◆The table and chairs designed partly by Karin Larsson are depicted with the same careful attention as any work of art — in the Larssons' philosophy, everyday furniture deserved this level of regard.
  • ◆Light entering through the room's windows creates the characteristic Larsson interior atmosphere: clear, natural, filling the space without harsh shadows.
  • ◆Compare this everyday version of the dining room with the Christmas Eve Dinner image to see how the same space transforms under different light conditions and human occupation.
  • ◆The decorative details — painted motifs on furniture, textile patterns on walls or cushions — reveal Karin Larsson's craft contributions, making this room a collaboration between two artists.
