The Cemetery Gate

The Cemetery Gate, painted around 1825 and now in the Kunsthalle Bremen, depicts the entrance to a burial ground — one of Friedrich's most concentrated meditations on mortality. The gate, partially open, invites passage into the realm of the dead.
