Villa at Caprarola
Joseph Vernet·1746
Historical Context
This 1746 view of the Villa at Caprarola was painted during Joseph Vernet's long Italian sojourn, when he documented the Roman countryside and its historic architecture. The Villa Farnese at Caprarola, designed by Vignola in the sixteenth century, was one of the most celebrated Renaissance villas and a popular subject for landscape painters working in Italy. Characteristic of Vernet's approach, the work displays dramatic atmospheric lighting, Claudean landscape structure, theatrical storm and calm effects.
Technical Analysis
Vernet combines topographic accuracy in the villa's distinctive pentagonal architecture with atmospheric landscape painting, setting the grand building within a luminous Italian countryside.
