Virgin and Child Enthroned
Master of Frankfurt·1517
Historical Context
The Master of Frankfurt painted this Virgin and Child Enthroned around 1517 for the Walters Art Museum. The Master of Frankfurt was one of the most prolific Antwerp painters of the early sixteenth century, producing devotional panels for the international market that made Antwerp the commercial hub of European art trade. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The enthroned Madonna demonstrates the Master of Frankfurt's characteristic warm palette and detailed surface treatment, with the rich textiles and decorative elements that appealed to the Antwerp market's taste for sumptuous devotional imagery.
