Saint Sebastian and a Bishop Saint
Historical Context
The Master of the Virgo inter Virgines painted Saints Sebastian and a Bishop Saint around 1500. This anonymous master, named after a painting in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, was active in Delft and produced works of haunting emotional intensity. His angular, expressive style stands apart from the smooth refinement of contemporary Netherlandish painters. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Master's characteristic angular figures, sharp contours, and emotionally charged expressions. The thin, elongated proportions and intense gaze create an almost visionary quality.
