Le Voeu à l'Amour
Historical Context
Le Voeu a l'Amour (The Vow to Love) in the Louvre depicts a young woman making an offering at a love shrine, a quintessential Rococo subject that personified the era's devotion to Eros. Such allegorical scenes of amorous devotion were staples of French decorative painting. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The composition centers on the devotional gesture, framed by a lush garden setting rendered with characteristic Fragonard warmth. The figure's graceful pose and flowing drapery create an elegant compositional arabesque.
