The Virgin and Child with a Parrot
Fernando Gallego·1507
Historical Context
Fernando Gallego painted this Virgin and Child with a Parrot around 1507, during the late phase of his career as the foremost painter of Salamanca and Castile. The parrot was a symbol of the Immaculate Conception in Iberian iconography. Gallego's angular, expressive style drew on Netherlandish models, particularly Dirk Bouts and Schongauer. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Gallego's characteristic bold, angular drapery folds and intense color contrasts. The figures show the distinctive elongation and expressive intensity of the Hispano-Flemish style.
