Louis XV bestows the Order of the Holy Spirit in a grand ceremony depicted in this 1724 canvas at the Louvre, one of Lancret"s rare ventures into official court painting. The Order of the Holy Spirit was the most prestigious chivalric order of the French monarchy, and its investiture ceremonies were elaborate state occasions. Lancret received this commission early in his career when he was building his reputation beyond the fete galante, though he would ultimately return to his signature genre as his primary source of income.

The ceremonial subject demands a more formal composition than Lancret"s typical garden scenes, with ranked figures in an architectural interior. The palette shifts to deeper, richer colors—the blue ribbons and star insignia of the Order, the gold embroidery of court dress, and the crimson of ecclesiastical robes.
