Venice: The Piazza from the Piazzetta with the Campanile and side of San Marco by Canaletto

Venice: The Piazza from the Piazzetta with the Campanile and side of San Marco

Canaletto·1744

Historical Context

Venice: The Piazza from the Piazzetta with the Campanile and Side of San Marco, painted in 1744 and now in the Royal Collection, offers an unusual oblique view of the Piazza San Marco that reveals architectural relationships not visible in conventional frontal views. Looking from the Piazzetta into the main Piazza, the Campanile rises at left while the southern flank of San Marco's basilica dominates the middle ground. Canaletto's inventive choice of viewpoint demonstrates his ability to find fresh perspectives on even the most frequently painted locations. The painting belongs to the exceptional concentration of Canalettos in the Royal Collection, which provides the most comprehensive visual documentation of eighteenth-century Venice available anywhere.

Technical Analysis

The Campanile's towering form dominates the composition, with the Basilica's flank and the Procuratie providing horizontal architectural counterpoints. The interplay of light and shadow in the piazza creates spatial depth.
