View of Pirna from the Right Bank of the Elba
Bernardo Bellotto·1753
Historical Context
Bellotto's View of Pirna from the Right Bank of the Elba, painted in 1753 as part of his comprehensive documentation of the Saxon Erzgebirge town, demonstrates his approach to landscape-dominated vedute where the architecture plays a secondary role to the river and sky. The Elbe — broad, reflective, and animated by river traffic — provided Bellotto with the water surface that he, like his uncle Canaletto, used to extend and animate his compositions. These Pirna views were produced for the Dresden court.
Technical Analysis
The town's skyline, dominated by its church spire, is placed at the horizon, the wide Elbe occupying the lower half of the composition. Bellotto's cool, precise light and careful attention to cloud formations give the sky particular authority. The river barges and figures on the bank provide the foreground interest and sense of scale.
