View of Villa Perabò, later Melzi, in Gazzada
Bernardo Bellotto·1744
Historical Context
Bellotto's View of Villa Perabò (later Villa Melzi) at Gazzada, painted in 1744, is one of a series of Lombardy views commissioned by the Lombard noble Giulio Visconti Borromeo Arese, documenting his properties and estates in the region around Varese. These villa views were a significant commission for the young Bellotto, allowing him to demonstrate his abilities beyond the Venetian veduta tradition. The Gazzada villa, a charming Baroque country house in a hill landscape, gave him scope for combining architectural and landscape interests.
Technical Analysis
The villa is placed on a hillside, its architecture precisely rendered against the broader landscape of the Varese hills. Bellotto's cool, clear light models every window and garden wall with the precision of an architect's measured drawing. The surrounding parkland is handled with careful attention to tree species and garden geometry.
