Napoleon Crossing the Alps by Jacques Louis David

Napoleon Crossing the Alps

Jacques Louis David·1801

Historical Context

David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps of 1801 (the second version of the famous composition) depicts the First Consul on a rearing horse gesturing forward over the St Bernard Pass — an image of heroic military command that deliberately echoes Hannibal, Julius Caesar, and Charlemagne whose names are carved on the rocks below. The historical evidence is that Napoleon actually crossed the Alps on a mule; he asked David to depict him 'calm on a fiery horse.' The painting's propaganda function — creating an image of Napoleon for mass reproduction — was exactly fulfilled: it became the defining visual statement of early Napoleonic power.

Technical Analysis

The rearing horse and billowing cloak create a dynamic diagonal that sweeps from lower left to upper right, one of the most kinetically charged compositions in Western art. David's meticulous technique renders every detail of uniform, horse, and rocky landscape with crystalline clarity.
