Male Model

Male Model from 1900, now in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, was painted in the first year of the new century, when Matisse was still working through the influences of Cézanne, Signac, and his own Brittany studies. The male model — a studio figure studied for its formal properties rather than its individual identity — was a fundamental pedagogical subject in academic art education, and Matisse's engagement with it at this stage reflects the hybrid moment in which he found himself: trained in the academic tradition but moving steadily away from it. MoMA's acquisition of this work reflects the museum's institutional interest in the artist's pre-Fauvism period as the formative ground of a later revolution.

The handling shows the dark palette and constructed brushwork of Matisse's transitional period — heavier and more laboured than his later liberations of colour. The male body is modelled with attention to anatomical structure, but the brushwork already shows a tendency to follow its own rhythms rather than submit entirely to the model's observed forms.
