Processional Crucifix
Historical Context
Pietro di Francesco degli Orioli, who was a Sienese painter of the late fifteenth century who continued the local tradition with distinctive personal touches, created this work around 1480, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This work reflects the artistic culture of Siena during the Early Renaissance, when painters were forging new approaches to representation through the study of perspective, anatomy, and natural light.
Technical Analysis
The rendering of Christ's body on the cross demonstrates careful anatomical observation, with the surrounding figures arranged to express varying degrees of grief and devotion in a balanced compositional scheme.
