Madonna and Child
Historical Context
Paolo di Giovanni Fei, a Sienese painter active in the second half of the Trecento, created this Madonna and Child now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Fei's work represents the continuation of the great Sienese devotional painting tradition established by Duccio and Simone Martini, adapted to the more decorative and courtly tastes of the International Gothic period. His Madonnas were prized for their sweetness of expression and richness of ornamental detail, qualities that made Sienese devotional panels highly sought after across Europe.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera on gold-ground panel, the painting features Fei's distinctive blend of Sienese grace with increasingly ornamental surface patterning. The delicate facial features, elaborate gilded haloes, and rich color harmonies of blues, reds, and gold reflect the transition toward the International Gothic aesthetic.
