Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels
Lippo Memmi·1350
Historical Context
Lippo Memmi, brother-in-law and close collaborator of Simone Martini, created this Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels around 1350, continuing the refined Sienese Gothic tradition after Simone's death. Memmi inherited the elegant linearism and decorative sophistication of the Sienese school, producing altarpieces for churches across Tuscany. This sacra conversazione format, with the Virgin surrounded by saints and angels, served both liturgical and devotional functions in Gothic churches.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel in the characteristic Sienese manner, with sinuous contour lines, delicate facial modelling, and elaborate punch-work ornamentation in the gold ground. Memmi's palette favours warm reds and blues with refined tonal transitions inherited from Simone Martini's workshop practice.
