Saint Paul
Lippo Memmi·1330
Historical Context
Lippo Memmi, Simone Martini's brother-in-law and closest collaborator, painted this image of Saint Paul around 1330. The two artists ran a joint workshop in Siena that produced some of the finest Gothic paintings in Italy, including the celebrated Annunciation for Siena Cathedral. Lippo's independent works, while sharing Simone's refined aesthetic, often display a slightly more robust figural style and a distinctive approach to physiognomic characterization.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel, with the apostle Paul rendered in the refined Sienese Gothic manner. Lippo's figure shows the elegant linear draftsmanship shared with Simone Martini, combined with his own characteristic firmness in the facial features and drapery folds.
