Madonna and Child
Segna di Bonaventura·1320
Historical Context
Segna di Bonaventura produced numerous variations of the Madonna and Child, a subject central to Sienese devotional painting and civic identity, as the city was consecrated to the Virgin. This intimate panel, dating to around 1320, follows the compositional models established by Segna's uncle Duccio, whose monumental Maestà for Siena Cathedral set the standard for Marian imagery. Such panels served both church altarpieces and private domestic devotion.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold ground on panel, featuring the Virgin and Child in a half-length format against burnished gold. The painting exhibits Segna's characteristic approach: refined linear drawing, restrained tonal modeling, and delicate punch-work decoration in the haloes.
