Saint John the Evangelist with Acteus and Eugenius

This panel by Francescuccio Ghissi depicts Saint John the Evangelist flanked by his disciples Acteus and Eugenius, forming part of a multi-panel altarpiece cycle narrating the saint's life and miracles. Ghissi was one of the leading painters in the Marches region during the late Trecento, blending Giottesque spatial ideas with the decorative elegance of the local Gothic tradition. Such narrative altarpiece cycles served both devotional and didactic purposes, teaching illiterate congregations the lives of the saints.
