A Bishop Saint
Fra Angelico·1425
Historical Context
Fra Angelico's Bishop Saint at the Metropolitan Museum, painted around 1425, likely formed part of a larger altarpiece that has since been dismembered. Even in this modest panel, Fra Angelico demonstrates the luminous color and serene spirituality that made him the most beloved religious painter of the early Renaissance. Fra Angelico — born Guido di Pietro, known in religion as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole — was a Dominican friar whose painting practice was inseparable from his spiritual vocation. Working primarily for his own order and for Florentine civic and private patrons, he created some of the most luminous and spiritually powerful images in the history of European art.
Technical Analysis
The bishop figure is rendered in full episcopal vestments with Fra Angelico's characteristic soft, luminous modeling, the rich cope and mitre painted with attention to liturgical accuracy and decorative beauty.
