Marine Landscape with Towers
Salvator Rosa·1645
Historical Context
Towers rise along a Mediterranean coastline in this 1645 marine landscape at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Coastal fortifications were a familiar feature of the landscape Rosa knew from his Neapolitan youth, and their presence in his seascapes bridges the gap between landscape painting and the documentation of Mediterranean maritime architecture. The Palazzo Pitti"s collection, assembled by the Medici and Lorraine dynasties, includes several works from Rosa"s Florentine period.
Technical Analysis
The watchtowers provide vertical accents along a horizontal coastline, their geometric forms contrasting with the organic shapes of waves and clouds. Rosa renders the sea with horizontal strokes of varying blue and gray, suggesting the restless movement of coastal waters. The towers" stone surfaces receive more architectural treatment, with the warm tones of Mediterranean masonry contrasting with the cooler marine palette. The sky provides a dramatic backdrop of clouds and light.
