This swarm of cupids (Essaim d'Amours) in the Louvre depicts a cloud of putti in tumbling aerial formation, a decorative motif with deep roots in Italian ceiling painting. Fragonard transforms the academic tradition into a frothy, exuberant display of painterly virtuosity. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.

The swirling composition of airborne putti creates a dynamic, centrifugal design. The flesh tones are modulated with characteristic warmth while the clouds and sky are rendered with atmospheric freedom.
