An Inlet near Naples with a Castle and Fisherfolk
Joseph Vernet·c. 1752
Historical Context
An Inlet near Naples with a Castle and Fisherfolk from around 1752 by Vernet combines marine scenery with Neapolitan architecture and genre figures. The Bay of Naples provided Vernet with some of his most picturesque subjects during his Italian years. Vernet's oil technique carefully observed the behavior of light on water and cloud at different times of day and in different weather conditions, building atmospheric effects through careful layering of translucent glazes over solid underpainting.
Technical Analysis
The castle and inlet are rendered with architectural precision within a warm Mediterranean atmosphere, the fishing activities adding human interest to the coastal composition.
