View of Bordeaux Harbor
Joseph Vernet·1758
Historical Context
Vernet's View of Bordeaux Harbor from 1758 is another canvas from the Ports of France series, depicting what was then one of the most prosperous commercial ports in Europe, thriving on the Atlantic trade including the slave trade to the Caribbean. Bordeaux's eighteenth-century wealth had just built the magnificent place de la Bourse, and the city's grand neoclassical quays provided Vernet with a backdrop of urban splendor to contrast with the working activity of the harbor. The painting captured Bordeaux at the height of its commercial golden age, before the disruptions of Revolution and the Continental System devastated its trade.
Technical Analysis
Vernet sets the view from the water looking back toward the grand neoclassical facades of the city's quayside, with varied shipping in the foreground — from small fishing craft to ocean-going vessels. The warm evening or morning light creates a golden atmospheric unity across water, sky, and architecture.
