The Holy Family by Martin Schongauer

The Holy Family

Martin Schongauer·1485

Historical Context

Martin Schongauer's The Holy Family, painted around 1485 and now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, depicts Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus — the domestic sacred family that was one of the most intimate subjects in late medieval and Renaissance devotional art, emphasizing the human family relationships that structured divine redemption. This panel, one of Schongauer's very few surviving paintings, shows how the master who revolutionized the art of engraving in Germany translated his graphic intelligence into paint.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with the precise, refined handling that distinguishes Schongauer's painted work. The Holy Family is arranged in the intimate, domestic manner of Flemish-influenced German devotional painting — close, tender grouping emphasizing the human family bond within sacred context.
