Lamentation
Andrea Solari·1505
Historical Context
Andrea Solari painted this Lamentation around 1505, following his return to Milan from Venice. The emotional treatment of the dead Christ mourned by holy figures reflects both Lombard expressive traditions and Venetian coloristic influence. Solari was a close follower of Leonardo da Vinci, and the soft modeling here betrays that connection. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Leonardesque sfumato and careful anatomical rendering of Christ's body. The muted, somber palette heightens the devotional gravity of the scene.
