Gerard David painted these paired panels of the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Annunciate around 1510, during his years as the leading painter of Bruges after Hans Memling's death in 1494. David was the last great master of the Bruges school before the city's economic decline shifted artistic patronage to Antwerp, and his work represents the final flowering of the tradition begun by Jan van Eyck. leading painter in Bruges from the 1480s, bridged Early Netherlandish and Northern Renaissance traditions.
