Saint Ansanus
Simone Martini·1326
Historical Context
Simone Martini's Saint Ansanus is a pinnacle panel from the famous Maestà altarpiece in Siena Cathedral, depicting the first martyr of Siena whose evangelization of the city made him its patron saint. Ansanus, a Roman nobleman who secretly converted to Christianity and was martyred under Diocletian for preaching in Siena, occupied a unique place in Sienese civic and religious identity — his Romanness connecting the city to imperial history while his martyrdom established its Christian foundation. Simone's elegant Gothic figure style gives the young saint a refined aristocratic beauty that characterized his approach to all sacred figures.
Technical Analysis
